Effectively Using Git With Subversion. Like many organizations using Rails, we have caught the git wave, and are in a state of transition between git and Subversion. Our open- source work is stored in git repositories, but our client work is still stored in Subversion repositories, and probably will be for some time. While git is amazing, Subversion still has its good qualities, and makes an excellent centralized repository, especially with its ecosystem of user- friendly tools. The integration between git and Subversion (git- svn) is so well done that several of us have been using git as our interface to all our Subversion repositories. Doing this is fairly simple, but there are some interesting tricks, and so I thought I would share a day in the Viget life with git- svn. Getting your repository set up. Checking out a Subversion repository is as simple as can be: git- svn clone - s http: //example. It should map to the trunk of your Subversion repository, with a few exceptions. First, any empty directories under Subversion won’t show up here: git doesn’t track empty directories, as it tracks file contents, not files themselves. Also, files you were ignoring via svn: ignore are not ignored in this git repository. To ignore them again, run the following command in the root of your repository: git- svn show- ignore > . You may see this same command as git- svn show- ignore > > . The difference is that with the former method, you are adding a file in your repository that you can then track. Even though we will be committing back to Subversion, I like tracking . As you may have noticed, running git- svn show- ignore is slow, and by committing . Making branches. One of the best reasons to use git is its lightweight local branches. These are not the same as Subversion branches: they reside locally and can be created, destroyed, and merged easily. When working on a project, you’ll probably want to create a branch every time you work on a new feature. It’s very simple to do so: run the command git branch new. If you want to fork from the current branch, you don’t have to say so. If you are committing the change of another author you may alter the author field to give the name and email address of the. Rebase, A Simple Example. Let's have a look at some simple. This is because, Git does not. You can just as easily type git branch new. To move to this new branch, you run git checkout new. To make things easier, all of these steps can be combined, like so: git checkout - b new. You might wonder why your Subversion branches do not show up. They exist as remote branches, not local branches, but you can still get to them. Execute git branch - a to see local and remote branches, which should show you your Subversion branches and tags. Adding changes. Once you are in a branch for your feature, basic git usage is much like Subversion. When you create a new file, you execute git add < new. You will note that git add is recursive, and so git add . Do not make the same mistake I did early on: I manually removed a few files, and then, extrapolating from my experience with git add ., I thought, “I’ll run git rm - r . You can do this by executing git add < filename> or git add . Git Reference; Introdiction 1. Why I Like Mercurial More Than Git. If your git installation needs an extra entry in the PATH environment variable, you can enter it here and it will get added to the PATH environment variable automatically when TortoiseGit starts. Life of a Patch; Submitting Patches; View Patches; Life of a Bug. PATCH: Nernst-Planck equation example and test. I do not have time to review the patches right now. Books Audiobooks Comics Sheet Music. Hand-picked favorites from our editors. Editors' Picks Audiobooks. Hand-picked favorites from our editors. Editors' Picks Comics. The 'exec' command is a little special among rebase -i's commands, as it does *not* have a.A few of my Git tricks, tips and workflows. Every time Git does something, you usually have the option of taking an action before or after Git. By default, all plugins in vendor/plugins are loaded in alphabetical order. When you run git add - -patch, git will show you every chunk - that is, every set of changes - you made, and ask you whether you want to add it or not. This easily allows you to commit some changes, but not others, but even more importantly, it begins to show you how git tracks changes differently. It is a good habit to get into: looking at each of your changes before a commit helps make sure you are committing what you think you’re committing. Reverting changes. One command I used to use a lot in Subversion that doesn’t have a clear equivalent in git is svn revert. In git, how you revert depends on whether the change has been added to the current changeset. If it hasn’t, you can execute: git checkout < filename> I know, that seems incredibly strange. I thought so, too, at first. It makes sense when you think of it as re- checking out the last committed version over your changes. If you have added your change to the changeset, you will have to remove it from the changeset first, by executing: git reset HEAD < filename> Committing changesets. Committing is very familiar if you are used to Subversion. You execute git commit and get prompted for a message in your favorite text editor. If you have outstanding changes, and want to add them without looking at them, you can execute git commit - a. Merging a branch back to master. Once your feature is finished, you’ll want to merge your branch back to the master branch. This is way easier than it would be in Subversion. You just execute: git checkout master git merge < feature. They aren’t interactive, so you will have to go fix them in your editor. Add the conflict fixes to the changeset with git add, and then commit. Sometimes, you may make a lot of commits in your feature branch that you want represented as one commit in the main branch. This is especially useful if you’re using Cruise. Control or some other automated testing tool: you can make one large commit that passes all the tests, and don’t necessarily have to worry about passing all the tests while developing your feature. To do this, add the - -squash flag to git merge, like so: git merge - -squash < feature. After using it for the last month, I cannot imagine going back. Update: Since this post we've continued to use Git on a daily basis on our development projects. We've collected a list of our favorite tips that we hope you'll find useful. How Loyalty Program Service Providers Stack Up. In the current landscape of fickle consumers and countless brands, customer loyalty is the Holy Grail. Eight Providers. The report, “The Forrester Wave: Loyalty Program Service Provider, Q4 2. The market for such providers is growing, the report said, because of marketers’ needs to differentiate and to obtain resources they do not have internally, including technology, advanced analytics and expertise, all of which can be differentiators for acquiring loyalty. Forrester found several commonalities among the providers. The top Leaders are Brierley+Partners, Epsilon, Kobie Marketing, Maritz Loyalty Marketing and Aimia, followed by two Strong Performers – Olson 1to. Tibco Loyalty Lab. Also a second timer in this category, Brierley+Partners has the best customer references of all the surveyed vendors. Maritz Loyalty Marketing employs a psychological approach to loyalty strategy and is cited as a strategic partner and thought leader, although it is dragged down by “lagging technological capabilities.”Aimia is the largest vendor examined in the report, and its international presence, loyalty analytics and program operations in particular received commendation. The fast- growing Kobie Marketing is praised as having the best current offerings of all the surveyed vendors, as well as high marks for loyalty technology functionality, collaboration and understanding of client’s needs. Tibco Loyalty Lab, one of the two Strong Performers, features a self- service technology platform, although it had the lowest customer reference scores. The other Performer, Olson 1to. Denali Marketing in 2. The Only Contender. Connexions Loyalty, the only vendor in the Contenders category, provides what Forrester calls “a reasonable offering for financial services, travel and automotive clients looking for deep vertical experience and robust rewards catalogs and fulfillment features,” but is dinged for a lagging strategy. Overall, this report provides a top- level evaluation of selected providers in this increasingly important field. But a better picture of what these vendors actually provide in terms of differentiating services and products would have helped. For instance, what are some of the loyalty programs vendor X frequently recommends and why? Get an edge over your competition with a loyalty program that's customized for your business. Our web-based loyalty program software allows you to access your program wherever you are! Or, if Maritz Loyalty Marketing’s “special sauce” is, at least in part, its psychological approach to loyalty strategy, what does that entail? One of the key takeaways from the report is that the vendors “don’t just support points programs,” but build customer relationships – but how, and how do the vendors differ in this? Perhaps Forrester’s next iteration of this report could offer a ground- level sense of how a given vendor’s approach might be utilized in a client’s efforts.
